Swami Vivekananda’s elucidation of Niskama Karma (selfless action) presents a distinctive amalgamation of classical Hindu philosophy with contemporary social activism. Grounded in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, Niskama Karma traditionally underscores the need of executing one’s responsibilities devoid of attachment to results. Vivekananda elaborates on this notion by merging altruistic activity with the imperative for social involvement and reform. His interpretation contests traditional views of renunciation, advocating for active engagement in societal improvement while preserving spiritual detachment. Vivekananda emphasizes the relationship between individual spiritual development and social responsibility, thereby connecting philosophical reflection with actual engagement. His focus on Karma Yoga as a method for altering the individual and society is significantly pertinent in modern discussions on ethics, social justice, and activism. This dissertation rigorously analyzes Vivekananda’s redefinition of Niskama Karma, investigating its philosophical foundations and its influence on Indian social philosophy and international spiritual movements.
