Abstract

The rapid growth of digital payment systems has significantly transformed consumer buying behaviour in India. The introduction of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), mobile wallets, debit and credit cards, and internet banking has changed the way consumers make purchasing decisions. Digital payment systems have reduced transaction time, increased convenience, promoted cashless transactions, and influenced spending habits across income groups and age brackets. This study examines the impact of digital payment systems on consumer buying behaviour with special reference to convenience, security, trust, impulse buying, spending frequency, and customer satisfaction. It is grounded in both primary and secondary data: primary data are proposed to be collected through a structured questionnaire administered to selected consumers, while secondary data are drawn from RBI reports, NPCI statistics, government publications, and prior research. Statistical tools such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression, and ANOVA are applied to examine the relationship between digital payment usage and consumer buying behaviour. The findings indicate that convenience, ease of use, and promotional benefits significantly influence consumer preference for digital payments, and that digital payments increase purchase frequency and impulse-buying tendencies owing to a reduced psychological "pain of paying." Security concerns and gaps in digital literacy remain important challenges. The study concludes that digital payment systems have become a major determinant of modern consumer behaviour in India, and it offers policy and managerial suggestions to balance convenience with consumer protection.
